Interspersed throughout Amanda’s adventures are interviews with quantum physics experts and New Age authors.

Food, Inc.

DVD HD 9005 .F66 2009

“Drawing on Eric Schlosser’s Fast Food Nation and Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma, director Robert Kenner’s provocative, Oscar-nominated documentary explores the food industry’s detrimental effects on our health and environment.”
This documentary is extremely powerful, shocking and eye opening truth about our today’s food production.
It is an excellent movie to get knowledge about what we really buy in grocery stores and consume. Highly recommend to watch to anybody.

Julia Winterson came back to Mullaby temporarily. The deadline she has set for herself to finish her business is rapidly approaching but is she ready to leave permanently?

Can a hummingbird cake really bring back a lost love? Is there really a ghost dancing in Emily's backyard? The answers are never what you expect. But in this town of loveable misfits, the unexpected fits right in.

This story has a little bit of everything... romance, mystery, forbidden love, delicious food, all sprinkled with a hint of magic.

Crossfire
By Dick Francis and Felix Francis
CWC Library’s McNaughton Collection

Dick Francis’ books are of the mystery/adventure genre, but in reading his many books you can learn a lot about horses and steeplechase racing; he was also a jockey. At times you can feel you are in the race with the rider, but also help solve the story. This book is co- authored by his son Felix, so the tradition continues. Enjoy!

Robert Kenner

DVD HD 9005 .F66 2009

This film exposes the food industry. It shows where our food really comes from, and how the animals are treated. The filmmaker exposes slaughter houses and factory farms. The film shows that chickens are bred to grow so fast that most of them can’t even walk, the average hamburger contains meat from nearly 100 cattle, and mass production cattle are often raised knee-deep in their own manure. It’s a very interesting and disturbing film.

Think Harmony with Horses
By Ray Hunt

This book I’m only half way through and the amount of knowledge that Ray Hunt knows about horses is over whelming. He explains on what to think when your horse dose this or that and how to respond to their reaction. Ray hunt basically tells the reader that the horse is smarter then you and knows more then you. There is a saying that goes “You can lead a horse to water” Ray flips that saying around to be the horse will lead you to the watering hole of knowledge.

I think that this book is good book to read and will be towards anyone who has ever broke and trained horses before.

Gasland: Can You Light Your Water On Fire?

DVD: TN 881.G37 2010

As the number of drilling sites for natural gas increases, the water in several areas across the country (including Wyoming) is being contaminated and many residents are able to run their faucets and light their tap water on fire.  This ecological disaster affects 34 states.
Filmmaker John Fox travels across America to learn about hydraulic fracturing - also called “fracking” -  and asks questions about the safety of the practice.
I really enjoyed watching this documentary.  I learned a lot about how natural gas is acquired and the dangers and pollutants that result.  Citizens may want to learn more about the process of drilling for natural gas before supporting the idea that natural gas is a good, ecological alternative to other fuel sources.

‘The Aristocats’ is definitely a movie I would recommend for just about anyone of any age. This movie has been around since 1970 and I believe it to be enjoyable for each generation that comes into contact with it.  It is a charming, touching, and humorous movie. It has a lot of character, and is surely worth checking out!

Taking Chance
Film by Michael Strobl and Ross Katz
DVD PN 1997.2 .T35 2009

Taking Chance is a movie based on a true story about a Lt. Colonel in the Marines whose cathartic journey begins with volunteering to escort the remains of a deceased soldier to his hometown in Wyoming.  There are no surprises or plot twists, just the human experience of people who recognize the tragedy of one man’s death and the impact we have as we touch each other’s lives.

The special features were fabulous because you meet the real people represented in the story, glimpse how one young soldier lived, and the impact he made during his short 20 year life.

Holes

Louis Sachar

Holes is one of those books that you will always remember. The main character, Stanley is thrust into a world where “juvenile offenses”, like him are sent to a camp. At the camp they are required to dig holes, holes, and more holes. Our character finds a box which sets him off on an adventure of his lifetime. I love this book because it’s an easy read, but there are complex themes to also think about, such as the symbolism of holes.  If you haven’t read it, I would check it out!

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream
By
Hunter S. Thompson
PN 4874 .T444 A3 2005

This novel is not your average adventure story, but more of a twisted documentary of two people, journalist Raul Duke and attorney Dr. Gonzo, who take it to the next level to cover a couple events in Las Vegas. The two drives from California to Las Vegas with a suitcase of illicit drugs including LSD, ether, mescaline, cannabis, cocaine, amyls, uppers, downers, and a whole collection of assorted alcohol to the Mint 400, a race in the desert. The journalist, Raul Duke who is Hunter S. Thompson’s character, and attorney Dr. Gonzo, go out to cover the story, but instead decide to find the American Dream through fear and loathing.

Through out the novel, you watch these two get crazier and deeper into their drug induced experience, going days at a time totally losing control.  They constantly talk about the failure of the early 60’s counterculture and how it was so much better than the current times, story taken place in 1971.  They lose track of why they were sent out in the first place and start to solely focus on finding the American Dream.

This is truly an outrageous adventure with never a dull moment.  It’s an easy read, though at times gets confusing since the characters are on a different level at points.  It is humorous, serious, puts you on edge, and straight up great and interesting.  This is highly recommended if you are open to a different style of writing.  Hunter S. Thompson does not disappoint and is truly a genuine man who isn’t afraid to express himself and his view on life.
