As quoted in the author’s Afterward, “People of the Book is a work of fiction inspired by the true story of the Hebrew codex known as the Sarajevo Haggadah. While some of the facts are true to the haggadah’s known history, most of the plot and all the characters are imaginary.” Pg 370.
Have you ever picked up a book and wondered where it had been, how it got started, who had handled it, crafted the cover, who might have had to even give their life to save it? In these modern times I can’t imagine that anyone would want to destroy a book, but in the well-crafted stories that are cast back in time, the Sarajevo Haggadah survived and witnessed such events.
